Sex.com best of top domains – Overview on all times sales

Interested in Trying Your Luck in the Domain Marketplace? Discover the Top All-Time Sales!

Every week, millions of dollars are spent on top domain purchases. Once upon a time, domain names were completely free; however, that’s no longer the case. Today, most .COM domain names have an owner, making it increasingly rare to find an available .COM. Fortunately, there are still intriguing options, like ccTLD and gTLD domains, which have recently made their mark in weekly sales reports.

Let’s take a closer look at the top domain sales from 2003 to the present, focusing on the most expensive domain transfers.

All-Time Top Sales

What does this ranking entail, and what criteria do we consider?

This ranking exclusively includes domain name sales—developed websites are not included. As a result, sales of high-profile domains like insurance.com, vacationrentals.com, and privatejet.com are omitted since they are not “domain-only” sales.

Another key criterion is that the sales must be officially confirmed to qualify for the top sales chart. For instance, domains like 360.com (sold for $17 million by Vodafone) and shoes.com (sold for $9 million by Wal-Mart) do not meet this criterion and are excluded.

The crown jewel of domain sales is Sex.com, a three-letter, word domain that belongs to the .COM category. The largest all-time sales predominantly consist of word domains or very short ones.

Top .COM Domains

The .COM domains boast the highest number of top-level domains and command premium prices. In the top 20 list of the highest domain sales ever, .COM domains dominate, taking 18 out of 20 positions.

Leading the list is the premium domain Sex.com, which sold in 2010 for an astounding $13 million. The buyer, Gary Kremen, is also the owner of Match.com. This domain was originally registered in the 1990s.

Tesla.com follows in second place, acquired by Elon Musk for $11 million in 2016 from Stuart Grossman, who registered the domain back in 2002 (possibly as early as 1992).

Next is Fund.com, sold for approximately $10 million in 2008. Following that is Porn.com, which fetched $9.5 million in 2007, making it the second-largest sale at the time.

Porno.com is next in line, selling for around $8.9 million in 2015. Rick Schwartz purchased it from a college student in 1997 for just $42,000.

We.com and Diamond.com rank sixth and seventh, sold for $8 million and $7.5 million, respectively. The sale of We.com occurred in 2016, while Diamond.com was sold a decade earlier, in 2006.

In 2014, Z.com sold for $6.8 million to GMO Internet, Inc., marking the largest public domain sale of that year. Slots.com follows at $5.5 million, sold in 2010 after being registered in 1995. The final domain above $5 million is Toys.com, which was purchased by Toys “R” Us for $5.1 million in 2009.

As you can see, the top domains listed above, along with the eight other .COMs ranked further down, are primarily one-word or very short domains. The longest domain name in this list, California.com, was sold for $3 million.

The remaining list features one 7-letter domain and two 6-letter domains: Clothes.com ($4.9 million), Whisky.com ($3.1 million), and Vodka.com ($3 million). Other notable .COMs include IG.com, HG.com, MI.com, and ICE.com.

Top ccTLDs and gTLDs

What are ccTLDs? How do they compare to .COMs?

ccTLDs (country code top-level domains) and gTLDs (generic top-level domains) are generally more accessible and less expensive than .COMs. If you want to buy a domain for just a few dollars, these categories are worth exploring.

ccTLDs provide users with geographical coordinates for where the site is located. They play an essential role in international SEO, making it easier for search engines and users to associate content with a specific region or country.

So, how do ccTLDs and other domain types fare in the all-time sales rankings? The final two positions in our list belong to the new gTLD Sex.xxx, sold for $3 million, and the ccTLD Shopping.de, which sold for approximately $2.86 million.

Sex.xxx was transferred to Barron Innovations in 2014, while the German domain Shopping.de was sold in 2008.
